Ooh, yeah, it's getting to be that time again, isn't it? Good luck with Isaac, but also in general--you're kind of in a bad place for hurricanes.

Yup, passed us by - thank God. But here in Ponte Vedra, the hurricanes coming off the ocean rarely come to us, they hit the Gulf Stream and head for poor North Carolina - or they hit the Keys and then on to New Orleans or Texas if they don't peter out. My worry is always the monsters coming in off the Gulf, as they can possibly come on across the state to us.

Not only did it pass me by. It was a non-event. We got about 2 inches of rain and a moderate breeze. We had more than that when Hurricane Irene went by last year. They closed school and I got off work, though (government job ). Good luck to those in Louisiana and Mississippi.

The water topped the Levees in NOLA, and they have about 12 feet of flooding - hope they hold!!!

I thought we had managed to avoid the whole storm, but it moved a bit north on Thursday, so we were in the outer bands, so the labfamily got to spend part of Thursday night in the closet waiting the tornadoes out. We still got several inches of rain just being on the outskirts.....not nearly as much as the folks on the coast and Louisiana got though.

Just a bit of trivia here. My 9 year old's teacher asked the class for words describing a big wind, tornado, hurricane etc. My daughter said cyclone (she reads alot) and.........her teacher had no idea what she was talking about. Very sad....... she obviously never read the wizard of Oz.

The teacher didn't know what a cyclone was?

And by the way, the remnants of Isaac went through the Mid-Atlantic area in the last day and it was causing some havoc. It spawned isolated thunderstorms, downpours (5"-10" of rain in some areas) and tornados in DE, NJ and PA.

The teacher didn't know what a cyclone was? That's just terrible. And the teacher should have whipped out the dictionary in front of the whole class and looked it up!! How young is this chick??? (if she had looked it up, she would have taught them a very valuable lesson)

Thanks! I will when I can. Tomorrow is business as usual (so far), but Sunday I've been called into work and was told to pack a bag. So, I'm not sure if I will be home for a few days after that.

Good luck all and may this storm blow out fast!!!
and by the way, no, the teacher did not know what a cyclone was and probably doesn't even have a dictionary handy..... she is young and probably did not have the highest grades in school. She has also probably not taken any tests to get the job. This is an ultra religious jewish school and, to my desperation sometimes, they hire girls who seem clever enough. This is not the first time. I've had to correct the english principal's spelling too in the past. Thankfully my kids read and understand andprobably get most of their 'outside world', geographic, trivia, animal, weather education at home......
