"When this war is over, I'm going home."
A peddler comes into camp and Klinger spends Hawkeye's and BJ's money to buy a goat. BJ finds a vase and bids three dollars for it. Winchester outbids BJ but, when the major realizes that he is out of money, and, since the next day is pay day, he bribes the peddler fifty dollars to stay until then. Hawkeye is pay master and, while he is handing out money, wounded come. The doctor has Klinger stash the money while the staff is in surgery but, since no one except Colonel Potter knows the combination to the company safe (it is Mildred's measurements), the corporal puts it somewhere else. After O. R. Klinger and Hawkeye find that the goat has found the payroll and has eaten it all. Major Winchester, who didn't get paid, is now in a bind since he wants the vase badly. He goes to Sergeant Rizzo, who did get paid, and borrows fifty dollars at one hundred per cent interest per day. Winchester is worried about his debt, which is piling up over the next few days and finally destroys the vase in frustration. He ends up giving his entire paycheck to a sympathetic Rizzo. Meanwhile, Major Van Zandt comes from I-corps and tells Hawkeye that he owes the Army $22,340. Colonel Potter helps Hawkeye out of his situation by getting Klinger's goat to eat a report that Major Van Zandt has been working on for weeks.
Trivia: How much did Klinger buy the goat for?
Bonus: How much is Luther Rizzo's paycheck?
According to Radar in "Point of View" (S7), almost everyone in camp knows the combination to the company safe. The combination was probably changed since then. Hawkeye mentions he was payroll officer once before. This might be "Payday" (S3). There is a tribute to Radar and Grape Nehi in this episode. This is Tom Kindle's second appearance on M*A*S*H. The is the second and final episode that David Ogden Stiers directed.
A fairly good end to season 10. That is, this is the last episode of season 10 only as far as air date is concerned.
