"The nights can get kind of lonely when all you've got to curl up with is your pillow."
Trucks carrying actors in a U. S. O. burlesque show are travelling down a road when shelling starts. One of the actresses, Marina Ryan, has appendicitis and is shuttled to the 4077th with the rest of the wounded. In post-op the patients recognize her. Then her troupe comes to camp to see her. They are asked to stay and do a show but there is not enough time. They finally convince the manager, "Fast" Freddy Nichols, to do a show. Hawkeye and BJ can’t stand Fast Freddy's humor, but Winchester can't stop laughing. The show guest stars Klinger screwing up a skit and Margaret who gets up to sing. The next morning Marina thanks Hawkeye for helping her with a kiss. She doesn't want to leave when it is time to go so Hawkeye tries to convince her she doesn't like him. A problem patient in post-op refuses to talk. After Marina talks to him about apples he starts talking again. The burlesque show is about ready to leave when they learn that all the roads have been restricted. They have to stay another day. Freddy's bad jokes and Winchester's laughter drive Hawkeye and BJ from the Swamp and Klinger tries to become a stand-up comedian. The stripper, Brandy Doyle, spends the night in Margaret's tent and they talk about loneliness. Brandy and Colonel Potter socialize, but the colonel passes out drunk. Father Mulcahy helps another actress, Sarah Miller, to find some ballet shoes that her brother had brought to Korea to remind him of his girlfriend. Her brother had died and the shoes were lost. Another actress, Ellie Carlyle, is entertaining the men in the officers' club with her accordion when Winchester complains. She promptly goes to the piano and plays Beethoven's Sonata No. 8, "Pathetique" for him. Finally the group leaves. Klinger decides to take up playing the accordion.
Trivia: What is Brandy's real name?
Bonus: Where is Fast Freddy trying to get to on time?
The tenth season started late due to a writer/director strike. This episode was produced during the 9th season of M*A*S*H. It was completed before "Blood Brothers" and "The Foresight Saga" which aired during season 9. Note that 10th season episode production numbers start with "1-G". This episode originally aired as an hour long episode. The joke Hawkeye makes about stewardesses is similar to the one he made in "War Co-Respondent" (S8).
Gwen Verdon is the big star of this episode. She starred in "Damn Yankees!" and "Cocoon" on the big screen. She would also be Katherine Peterson on TV's "Magnum, P.I." Danny Dayton was Hank Pivnik on "All in the Family" and "Archie Bunker's Place". Gail Edwards would later be seen as Dot Higgins on TV's "It's a Living". Karen Landry was Myra White on "St. Elsewhere". Amanda McBroom was the lawyer on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" that argued that Data was an object to be taken apart and studied ("Measure of a Man"). This is Brian Byers' second outing on M*A*S*H.
I thought this was a boring episode. Not a good introduction to a season.
