OH HOW WE DANCED
Production: Z-414 (208)
Aired: February 23, 1981 (208)
Writer: John Rappaport
Director: Burt Metcalfe
Guest Stars
Catherine Bergstrom - Peg
Michael Choe - Soon Chi Lu
Jennifer Davis - nurse
Shari Saba - nurse
Yuki Shimoda - Key Yong Lu
Arlen Dean Snyder - Major Finch
"Off with the white clothes, on with the green clothes."
Hawkeye and BJ are changing out of their surgery outfits when a man, Key Yong Lu, brings in a wounded boy, Soon Chi Lu. The boy had lost his harmonica in the attack. BJ sets out to find another for him. Colonel Potter volunteers Winchester to go on an inspection tour. After recording his will, Winchester goes and fails the unit, then returns proud of his work. Later, the unit commander, Major Finch, comes to the 4077th, drunk, and hits Major Winchester. Winchester won't press charges because he doesn't want to admit his cowardice. Hawkeye and BJ take advantage of the situation and press their own charges. Imitating Winchester, they ask Major Finch for "an harmonica." Then Key Yong teaches Winchester how to do karate. When Major Finch comes to deliver the harmonica, Winchester shows off his newly learned talent. The staff throws BJ an anniversary party with a movie from Peg and a tape that Hawkeye secretly makes of a conversation he has with BJ.
Trivia: What does Major Winchester leave his sister, Honoria, in his will? Why?
BJ says "I can't believe it's been almost a year" and "On our last anniversary, Peg was 8 month's pregnant." This makes it sound as if BJ has been in Korea much less than a year and Erin can be no more than 10 months old. In "Souvenirs" (S5) BJ said Erin was 2 (and stops). We assumed he meant years - but perhaps it was months. Catherine Bergstrom reprises her role as Peg Hunnicutt. This is Yuki Shimoda's final appearance of three on M*A*S*H. Sadly, he would pass away soon after this episode aired.
This episode is very well done and succeeds in being a "tear-jerker". One of the best of season 9.
