THE BEST OF ENEMIES
Production: Z-404 (198)
Aired: November 17, 1980 (Season Premier) (195)
Writer: Sheldon Bull
Director: Charles S. Dubin
Guest Stars
Mako - Li Han
"He calls himself a doctor."
Hawkeye is singing and dancing as he is preparing himself for R and R. Before Hawkeye leaves he gets a letter from his dad with a picture in it. On the way to Seoul, sniper fire hits the tire of Hawkeye's jeep. Then the engine stalls as he tries to get out of there. The sniper, Li Han, leads Hawkeye at gun point behind some bushes to another North Korean who is severely wounded. Hawkeye wants to take him back to the 4077th, but Li Han won’t let him. Li Han forces Hawkeye to operate at gunpoint, but the injury is too severe. Hawkeye tries to do a tracheotomy when the man starts choking, but by the time he has finished the man had died. Li Han lets Hawkeye go and starts digging a grave. Hawkeye helps him dig. Meanwhile, back at the 4077th, Colonel Potter gets a letter that says Mildred took first place in a bridge tournament and he is mocked by Winchester. The two make a challenge to find out who is the better bridge player and recruit BJ and Margaret as partners. After a lot of insults and threats, BJ and Margaret go up against the colonel and Winchester. BJ and Margaret win.
Trivia: With what does Winchester have to bribe BJ to get him to play?
Potterisms: "Beaver biscuits!", "Hot mustard!"
Colonel Potter and Winchester played bridge (happily?) together in "Rally Round the Flagg, Boys" (S7). The ninth season started late due to the actors' strike of 1980. This is Mako's final appearance on M*A*S*H. M*A*S*H nearly lost Loretta Swit over the summer. She was the original Cagney in the pilot of TV's "Cagney and Lacey" and she wanted to stay on for the series. Fortunately for M*A*S*H (and unfortunately for Swit) executives wouldn't let her out of her contract.
This was an OK start to season 9.
