"This is the new Hawkeye Pierce, no preservatives."
In the officers' club, Igor hands out everyone's tab. Hawkeye has a fit when he sees how much he owes and vows to stop drinking for a whole week. Once he gets sober, he starts bugging everyone. He gets up early and shaves, does pushups at night, juggles, describes the smell of his food, and takes his pen back from BJ. He lectures Lieutenant Mendenhall, a nurse that he has a date with, and makes her mad. When the others get angry with him, Hawkeye accuses them of trying to get him to drink again. Meanwhile, Winchester learns that his sister is engaged to marry an Italian. He does everything he can to stop the wedding. Then he learns that the family of the groom intervened to stop the wedding and is even more furious. Winchester and Hawkeye have and argument that drives BJ from the Swamp to find a quiet place to sleep. Winchester finally sends an apologetic telegram to his sister. In O. R. a North Korean pulls a grenade on the medical staff and they sing to him to calm him down. This almost drives Hawkeye to drink again.
Trivia: How much money did Hawkeye owe on his bar tab?
Winchester's letters:
Dear Dodo,
I await with baited garlic breath the announcement of your firstborn: "To Honoria and Vito, the Big Knife, Machete, a 12-pound 10-ounce organ grinder."
My Dear Sister,
An incredibly profound experience has served to intensify the significance of your last letter. It made me realize with keen awareness how precious is life and the loved ones with whom we share it. You are about to receive several boorish letters which I deeply regret sending. Please attribute them to greatness of distance, and narrowness of mind. I finally realize to my shock and shame that you are no longer the naive little sister that I left at home. I wish I could be there to share the pain you must feel. It's only now that I have begun to comprehend its depth. Stop.
Love Charles.
Colonel Potter mentions Groundhog Day as the date of his wedding anniversary. In "Images" (S6) he has already said his anniversary is in April. Winchester mentions his address as 30 Briarcliff Lane. In "Rally Round the Flagg, Boys" (S7) he mentioned Wellesley as his city. There is a 30 Briarcliff Lane about 10 miles from Wellesley in Holliston, Mass.
Shelley Long was best known for playing Diane Chambers on TV's "Cheers". She was also Carol Brady in all of the Brady Bunch movies both on the big screen and on TV. She also had starring roles in other movies like "The Money Pit" with Tom Hanks. This is the very first credited episode for regular background actress Shari Saba.
An OK episode.
