"You different men are all alike."
At a staff meeting, Hawkeye announces that he is bored. Colonel Potter announces that BJ and Winchester were selected to write a paper on an operation they did on a past patient, Corporal Howser. Hawkeye, looking for something to entertain himself offers to be their scribe, but he is shoed away. He offers to take Father Mulcahy to the orphanage and is turned down. He tries to get Igor to play scrabble with him. Finally, Scully rides into camp with a bottle of wine to share with Margaret. Hawkeye gets Scully to drink with him. Margaret finds out that Scully was busted to private for hitting a Lieutenant. Margaret is concerned, but Scully doesn't care. He wants her to be a woman. Margaret goes to Hawkeye for advice, then to Klinger for a dress, and then returns to Scully. Then Scully finds out that he is really a Sergeant down deep. Margaret returns to Hawkeye for comfort and plays scrabble with him. BJ and Winchester, meanwhile, are constantly arguing about insignificant details in the paper they have to write. They decide to write separate papers until Colonel Potter and Hawkeye knock some sense into them.
Trivia: What did Scully want Margaret to make for him?
This episode comes closest to revealing Margaret's feelings for Hawkeye as she lumps him with her other three men, Frank Burns, Donald Penobscot, and Scully. This is the final episode of the Scully saga. The other episodes were "A Night at Rosie's" (S7) and "Guerilla My Dreams" (S8). Hawkeye mentions "the woman he loved" in med school that he didn't have time for. This is most likely the same woman as in "The More I See You" (S4). The operation on Corporal Howser did not occur in any M*A*S*H episode.
This is one of the many episodes that center on how someone's ego gets cut down. This is an entirely forgettable episode.
