"Harold, meet George . . . George, this is Harold."
The staff is playing poker at the chopper pad while waiting for a badly wounded patient to be shuttled in. Before the man, Corporal George Hudson, is off the chopper, Hawkeye has already started the operation, by cutting into his chest and putting pressure on the aorta. They estimate twenty minutes before brain damage and paralysis occurs. A clock is superimposed on the screen. When the doctors get Hudson into O. R., though, they find out that there are no grafts big enough for what they need. Just at that moment, two more wounded men are brought in. Harold Sherwood's head had been injured so severely that there is no hope for him to live. The other soldier, Private Roberts, can't understand why BJ isn't tending to his friend. Father Mulcahy tries to calm the private down. Time is running out while BJ is waiting for Harold to die so his aorta could be removed and given to George. Meanwhile, the 4077th runs out of the blood type that George needs. Major Winchester volunteers to donate promising that he wouldn't pass out. Finally, BJ comes running in with the graft. Winchester tries to instruct Hawkeye how to do the operation and ends up passing out. When the operation is finished, the doctors realize that they have gone over the time limit by three and one half minutes. When George wakes up, though, he is able to wiggle his toes.
Trivia: What did Private Roberts want from Harold before his friend died?
Facts about Winchesters: Winchesters have always given blood in times of service -- starting with the Revolutionary War. A Winchester never accepts charity.
Kevin Brophy is one who also has guest appearances on both M*A*S*H spin-offs, "Trapper John, M.D." and "After MASH". Gary Burghoff is credited for this episode, though he doesn't appear.
This is a very good episode.
