"When you're wearing a green tuxedo, you go where they send you."
In O. R. the doctors are joking around except for Colonel Potter. Private Paul Conway, a clumsy foot soldier, is brought in with torn ligaments, having tripped in a foxhole. Then Klinger introduces the camp personnel to "chef" Paul Conway. The entrepreneur (Klinger) becomes the head waiter for the mess tent, taking reservations and seating people. The staff tries to get Conway transferred to the 4077th permanently. Meanwhile, Colonel Potter is feeling quite cranky since his wife sent him a discouraging letter and he couldn't get her on the telephone. Klinger calls Radar who is on R and R in Tokyo about the problem, but Radar refuses to be interrupted. There is party noise going on in the background, but then we see it is coming from the room next door. When the colonel catches the doctors talking to Adjutant General Haggarty in Seoul about Private Conway's transfer, he cancels the request and threatens to retire. This brings General Haggarty to the 4077th to find out what the problem is. Then the general tastes Private Conway's food. The general wants him transferred to his staff, but Conway wants to go back to the front to cook for his buddies there. The request is granted. Klinger attempts to be the cook using Private Conway's recipes with a few substitutions. Margaret counsels Colonel Potter about his concerns. Finally the colonel gets a letter from his wife apologizing for the first letter.
Trivia: What games does Mildred play? When and Where?
Mildred's letter:
Dear Sherman
I'm writing you from Pensacola. I met a wonderful young man yesterday, Lyle and Mavis Wilson's boy. They're Portia's neighbors. He's back from Korea where he was wounded and he told me a MASH unit saved his life. As I listened to him I could imagine you as his doctor. The miles between us seemed to disappear and for a few minutes it was as if you and I were together. It made me realize how unfair my last letter was. It's just that sometimes I get tired of being alone. I get angry and blame you. And when you're not here to yell at I get even angrier. I hope you can somehow understand what I'm saying. I might let off steam once in a while but I adore you. I'm very proud of you and I wouldn't trade my life for anyone's.
Love Mildred.
Ed Begley Jr. was playing Ensign Greenbean on "Battlestar Galactica" at the time. But he became best known as Dr. Victor Ehrlich on the television show "St. Elsewhere". He also played a doctor on the series "7th Heaven" and had several other recurring guest spots on many other series. He also had a significant role playing a doctor on the final episode of "Monk".
John Randolph was perhaps more recognizable at the time. He had appeared as the Chairman in many of the "Planet of the Apes" movies and had a starring role with Al Pacino in "Serpico". Most recently he played Tom Hanks' father in "You've Got Mail".
Gary Burghoff is listed in the opening credits of as a guest star for 9 of the first 11 episodes of this season in production order (for some reason they miss him on "Are You Now Margaret?" and "Nurse-Doctor"), though he only appears in person in 3 of them, including this one.
An OK start to the eighth season.
