Hindsight being 20/20, I've found it interesting to go back and watch the old episodes and see foreshadowing of Hawkeye's breakdown in the finale. Anybody else? (And yes, I know this is fiction and it's a comedy/dramedy.) Something interesting I read today, too: ever heard of "Witzelsucht"? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witzelsucht Gosh, now, WHOM does that remind us of??? "I'll carry your books, I'll carry a torch, I'll carry a tune, I'll carry on, carry over, carry forward, Cary Grant, cash and carry, carry me back to Old Virginia, I'll even 'hari-kari' if you show me how, but I will not carry a gun!"

It's a thin line between sanity and insanity, and Hawkeye danced around on it for the duration. Can't say I blame him though......don't know how sane I would have been, given the situation.

I think it was the ONLY way to survive, to joke around, do or say crazy things just to kind of block out what they were dealing with.

I agree with yeapb, wasn't it Hawkeye that said "if we don't go mad once in a while, we'll all go crazy"

I've noticed in the early seasons how there is that sense of Hawkeye slowly having a breakdown. Especially in the episode Dr.Pierce and Mr.Hyde where he won't stop working and get some rest.

It is certainly there throughout and in the final episode it is sad to find Hawkeye in that state - but no surprise. Hawkeye is such an intense character and really, despite all the jokes and larks (and womanising), he takes things too seriously.
