Corporal Walter Eugene "Radar" O'Reilly
"If it wasn't for that leprechaun, 4077 would be a license plate." (1)
"You just want to take him home and cuddle him." (2)
Corporal Walter (3) Eugene (4) "Radar" O'Reilly is the company clerk of the outfit. This character is played by the same actor in both the movie and the series (Gary Burghoff) which is rare for series that are based on movies (or vice versa). He is nicknamed Radar because he often knows what is going to happen before it happens. He says he gets it from his Uncle Ernest, who moved to the undertaker's a week before he died (5). The character became renowned for being just one syllable ahead of Henry Blake when the colonel is giving him an order. He also announces that choppers are coming before anyone else can hear them. He often slips in to save the day before he is asked or noticed.
Radar is a symbol of the boys that came to Korea and left as men (6). The Radar in the movie is not developed enough to compare with the series Radar. The series Radar is usually calm, cool, and collected when others are panicking. He is an expert at swindling Henry out of a signature. When he dictates a letter he gets down every word including the exclamation points. When Radar isn't doing something important during an episode, he is doing some rather bizarre things such as mailing a jeep home (7) or selling shoes (8).
Radar is from Ottumwa, Iowa (9), where he lives with his Mother, Edna (10), who is on electrolysis, and Uncle Ed (11) – I am not sure if the name similarity is intentional. Uncle Ed plays the pipe organ and served in World War I (12). He mentions a living father (13), but later his "pop died when he was little" (14). Radar's father was 63 when Radar was born (15) and served in France in World War I. He mentions a 37-year-old sister that looks like Margaret (16). He mentions the same or another sister that borrowed his bike (17). He also mentions a brother who is 4F gave him his teddy bear (18) and a little brother that didn't live (19). He also has more than one nephew (20). He has numerous uncles: Albert (21), Bill (22), Charles (23), Dave (24), Howard (25), Ed (26) and Ernest (27); aunts: Emily (28), Jean and Dorothy (29); and cousins: Ernie (30), Millie who runs a charm school and a gas station (31), Jimmy (32) and Raymond (33). Radar had a girlfriend when he left for Korea, but she "dear Johned" him (34). Just before he leaves Korea, he meets a beautiful young nurse and has his first voluntary kiss of the series (35).
One cannot discuss Radar's family without mentioning the animals. In Iowa, he has two dogs, Leon (36) and Ranger (37), at least two cows, Betsy (38) and Edna (hopefully not after his mother) (39), sixteen cats (40) - but later "the" cat died (41), a goat, Randy (42), a 20 year old turtle he raised from a pup (43) and, of course, Private Charles Lamb (44). At the 4077th, he has an earthworm farm (45); guinea pigs--Dopey (46), Manny, Moe, and Jack (47), and Bongo and Babbette (48); a hamster--Black Beauty (49); rabbits--Snuffy and the "doo-doo" twins (50), Fluffy and Bongo (51); a mouse--Daisy (52); a goat--Pokey (53); an unnamed turtle (54); a skunk (55), a possum, and a raccoon (56); and a hive of bees--the queen of which is Isabella (57). He gives each animal a dog tag (58) and lets them stay in the VIP tent when it is not in use (59).
Radar most likely dropped out of Ottumwa Central (60) high school to join the Army as his serial number(s), RA3911810 (61) or RA1949069 (62), would suggest (RA means regular Army). The corporal did get his high school diploma by mail at the 4077th from the AAA High School of Dellavin, Indiana (63). While in Korea, he gets a Purple Heart (64). Radar leaves Korea and the Army after being informed that his Uncle Ed had died (65).
He is extremely modest and shy – even refusing to undress in front of the doctors (66) - and gets his thrills from looking through the hole in the shower tent while the nurses are taking their showers. At home on Saturday nights, he would watch the store workers undress the window mannequins (67). He sleeps with a teddy bear, which he leaves in Korea (68) and ends up in the time capsule (69). He only swears twice (70). He misses the grass and the sky (71). He is always worried about getting in trouble. He idolizes the doctors, especially Hawkeye, and often comes to him for advice on women and growing up. He doesn't drink alcohol, but he can recognize the smell of specific drinks on Henry's breath (72). He drinks a Shirley Temple before the fourth season when his favorite drink becomes a grape Nehi.
Radar always has heaps of food on his plate at meal times (73). We later learn that this is for his animals. Henry says Radar has six toes on each foot (74). He had an imaginary childhood friend name Shirley (75). He stashes his money in his teddy bear (76). He plays the bugle (77), piano (78) and drums (79). He wears his boots to bed (80). He has been wearing glasses since he was 2 years old (81). His blood type is B (82). At the 4077th Radar has both his appendix (83) and his tonsils removed. His mother drives a Nash (84). His religion is Methodist (85).
