Corporal/Sergeant Maxwell Q. Klinger
"Your problem is there's nothing wrong with you." (1)
"I got a soft spot for Klinger. He looks a little like my son and dresses a lot like my wife." (2)
The character of Corporal Maxwell Q. Klinger was originally intended to be a single guest spot, but the soldier in drag became an instant hit and Klinger was brought back again and again until he finally became a regular. Later he takes over for Radar as company clerk, is promoted, and, most ironically, stays in Korea after the war. The character was modeled after Jamie Farr, who plays the corporal.
Corporal Klinger was born and raised at 1215 Michigan Street (3) -- Michigan and Galena (4) -- in Toledo, Ohio, (5) and plans to stay there the rest of his life. His family includes his father, Harry (6) or Amos (7) -- nicknamed Butch (8), who was twice bowling champion; his mother, Frieda (9) who can't read or speak English (10) and whose maiden name is Abodeely (11); and two sisters, one is named Yvonne (12). (Incidentally Harry and Frieda are Larry Gelbart's parents' names as well as Captain Tuttle's parents' names (13).) One sister is married (14). He is the middle of the three children, and definitely has no brothers (15). During the series, he marries Laverne Esposito (16), later she wants a divorce to marry Morty Shaw (17). Then he watches as his best friend, Gus Nagy, who is supposed to get Laverne back, ends up marrying her (18). Finally, during the final episode, Klinger marries Soon Lee Han (19). It is never revealed what his middle initial stands for.
Klinger’s extended family includes an unusual number of uncles: Abdul (20) (who is the only one that speaks English), Ahmed (21), Amir Abdullah (22), Bob (who wore nylons to get out of World War II) (23) , Gus (who got out of World War I as his Aunt Gussie) (24), Bustaffa (25), Habib (who won’t be needing the zoot suit for one to five years) (26), Hakim (27), Harry (the lawyer in prison) (28), Paul (29), Jake (who has passed away) (30), Jameel (the camel rustler) (31), Yusef (32), Zach (who also got out of World War I wearing dresses) (33), and 7199199 (34). It is unknown which uncle lives in Chicago (35) and which uncle is on the Toledo City Council (36). He is also related to Hassan, the enforcer, but it is unknown how (37). He has an Aunt Megla (38). He has a relative, Fatima, who is a cousin in one episode (39) and an aunt in another (40), a cousin Hakeem (41), and a cousin Numnum (42), who is a roller derby queen. One of the friends he grows up with is Eddie Fahey (43).
Corporal Klinger is an excellent soldier and company clerk. He just doesn't want to be in the same country as a war. Klinger chooses to get away from the war by doing what several of his uncles had done successfully, wearing dresses. Unfortunately, it doesn't work for Corporal Klinger. For most of the first 7 seasons (2 years from April 22nd (44)) he tries to get a section 8 (a discharge for a psychological problem) by dressing in drag. He also comes up with many other schemes to get back to Toledo where he will be relatively safe but, when one actually works, he can't go through with it. He absolutely refuses to accept a dishonorable discharge, though. After Radar goes home, Klinger starts to feel more needed. He stops trying to get out of the Army and, instead, becomes an eccentric entrepreneur. After the war ends, Klinger actually stays in Korea to help his new wife look for her parents.
Klinger is a man who grew up using horseshoes for self-defense on the streets (45). He becomes the best scrounge the 4077th has ever had. He is a very good soldier who would never jeopardize the lives of others.
His favorite movie star is Rita Hayworth (46). He has an Arab platitude for all occasions. His fingernail polish color is flame d'amour (47). He has B+ blood (48). He was an atheist (49), but he gave it up for lent (50). He was born with great hands (51). He started shaving when he was 12 (52). His social security number is 556-78-2613 (53). He is 30 years old by addition (54). Klinger's high school is Tony Waite High (55). Klinger's serial number is US19571782 (56).
