Major Margaret Houlihan
"You got to know how to talk to her." (1)
"Did I mention she's really something?"(2)
Major Margaret Houlihan, or O'Houlihan in the movie, is the chief nurse at the 4077th. She is very single but has a rule against sleeping with people who don't outrank her. In the movie, Margaret takes a stand against having nicknames so it seems only appropriate that she be given a nickname. She gets the nickname "Hot Lips" after her quick affair with Frank Burns is broadcast on the camp's P. A. system. The nickname seems to die out by the 5th season, however. In both the movie and television show, it is not until after Frank leaves that Margaret starts to get respect among the doctors she works with.
Margaret grew up in the Army with her father, "Howitzer" Alvin F. Houlihan (3), who served in the World War I 127th cavalry (4), mother, also an Army nurse (5) who is a boozer and cleptomaniac (6), and a younger sister (7). Her parents had been separated for a year in the 7th season (8) and are divorced by season 9 (9) when Margaret's father visits the 4077th (10). Earlier she says that her father had passed away already (11). Her romance with Donald Penobscott is one of the few soap operas of the episodes. In three consecutive seasons Margaret gets engaged, marries, has a rocky marriage, and gets divorced (12). Margaret has one birthday during the episodes (40).
Margaret grew up an Army brat at Forts Benning, Ord, Dix, and Kilmer (13). She mentions she was conceived on maneuvers (14). Her father was stationed in Fort Bliss when she was 7 (15). She has been in the Army for ten years and has a spotless record (16). Later she has served eighteen years (17). She served at Fort Benning (where Frank also served) with General Hammond (18), at Fort Ord under General Bradley Barker (19), and in Berlin with General Hardcastle (20). She was also in San Diego with Captain Sherman (21). Her father served under General MacArthur when they fought the “Hucs” in the Philippines (22). She makes $400 a month for her duties at the 4077th (23). When the war ends, she is assigned to consolidate the MASH units (24). Then she plans to retire from the Army and take up civilian practice.
Margaret rarely jokes, but occasionally she'll pull a practical joke on the doctors. She believes she is not there to have fun (25). During the first three seasons, she seems to be Frank's sidekick as opposed to Trapper being Hawkeye's sidekick. In many episodes, she acts as Frank's mouthpiece when he wants to talk to Colonel Blake. (26) Though she tries to hold her poise at all times, she finds herself falling for Hawkeye's charms as early as the first season (27). She can be very passionate and emotional one minute and then be hard and unemotional the next (28). Ironically, she is very opposed to romances between men and women of the outfit. She can get very ornery when she is jealous (29). Later in the series, Margaret is more laid back and it doesn't take much to get Margaret involved in something she disapproves of. She is always quoting the rule book, but if it is for a good cause, she doesn't mind if the rules are bent a bit (30).
She has a Doris Day Scrapbook (31). Her perfume is forbidden furlough (32). Her political affiliation is Republican (33). She prefers to drive her boyfriends (34). Her lawyers are Whitehurst, Flynn, Flynn, and Whitehurst (35). She speaks a little Korean. She enjoys being a showoff (36). She loves yoga (37). She is sensitive to loud noises (38).
