Captain John Xavier McIntyre
“[He's] one of the best darn cutters in the whole shootin' match. . . . [He's a] good friend, good companion; He's taken a lot of the rottenness out of the war for all of us.” (1)
“He does have a certain je ne sais quoi.” (2)
Captain "Trapper" John Francis (movie) Xavier (25) McIntyre is the most mysterious of the major characters. He got his nickname after he "trapped" a beauty queen in the toilet of the Boston-Maine express train. The movie reveals that Hawkeye and Trapper knew each other from their college days. The movie treats Trapper as a major character and the protagonist of several scenes with Hawkeye as the sidekick. He is the chief surgeon of the 4077th in the movie. The television series never portrays Trapper as anyone but Hawkeye's “Sancho Panza”. The writers started adding depth to the character at the end of the third season, but by then it was too late to keep Wayne Rogers interested in the part. A M*A*S*H spinoff, “Trapper John, M. D.”, was created based on the character of Trapper though Wayne Rogers did not play the character. This sequel was a drama rather than a situation comedy.
The movie states that Trapper is from "Baston", but he is also single in the movie. In the television series he has a wife, Louise (3), and two daughters, Kathy (4), who must be the 5-year old (5), and Becky (6), who is 7 (7). He came close to adopting a Korean boy named Kim (8). There is no clue to Trapper’s age.
The only thing the television series says about Trapper's background is that he interned in Boston (9). He did a little boxing (10) and played football (11) in college. It also says that he didn't study medicine in his home state (12). He says he started out to be an architect but couldn't handle the math (13). His wife believes that his coming to Korea was a plot to cheat on her (14). When he gets his discharge, Trapper runs naked through the mess tent (15). Hawkeye is on R and R at the time and the two never get to say goodbye except via a kiss from Radar (16).
Trapper is a very serious person that allows himself to go crazy at times. He often gets to play the hero (17). He is portrayed as the "ultimate practical joker" (18) long after he is gone. The problem is there were no practical jokes instigated by Trapper during the TV series. Though he is married, he still chases after the nurses and often competes for the same nurse that Hawkeye is after. He has a very addictive laugh.
Trapper is 6 foot 3 (19). He plays the ukulele (20) and piano in certain episodes (21). He reads “Field and Stream” and “Popular Mechanics” (22). Being at the 4077th gives him an ulcer (23).
