Lieutenant Colonel Henry Blake
"Henry was OK from the navel out in every direction." (1)
"The colonel was a top notch kind of guy." (2)
The original commander of the 4077th was Lieutenant Colonel Henry Braymore (movie) Blake, building the unit with his own hands (3). This colonel is a fisher and from the Midwest, Bloomington, Illinois (4).
Henry Blake was born and grew up in Bloomington, Illinois (5). Colonel Blake, like most other major characters has his family changing during the show. Henry's wife is named Mildred (38) during the first season, but then her name changes to Lorraine (6). His wife is 35 (7) or 42 years old (8). In one episode, he met his wife at a freshman mixer at Bloomington-Normal (a nursing college) where she was Succotash Queen (9). Apparently, he proposed on the first date (10). In another episode, he says he met his wife at the Dearborn Street station in Chicago (11). But this may not have been his initial meeting -- only where they met for dates. During the show, his third child, an unnamed son, is born (12), but after that, he says he only has two children, even though we have three names: Molly was the one with the birthday party (13), and he talks to Janie and Andy on the phone (14). His mother's name was Margaret (15), he has a brother who is a prison warden (16), a cousin Floyd (17), and a fifteen year old cat (18) and a dog (19). Henry is 44 years old (20). Every Wednesday, Lorraine gets together with her friends, Ella, Bea, Marie and Olive at the Old Red Barn for lunch (21).
According to the movie, Henry joined the Army prior to Pearl Harbor. This would explain his rank. His alma mater is the University of Illinois (23) and he often wears a sweatshirt with that logo. While there, he was manager and medic for the football team (24). One has to assume that Henry is either a national guardsman whose unit was called up or a draftee surgeon rather than a regular Army commander. He left a going practice and a wife with a fistful of credit cards (25). Although his only desire is to get away from the 4077th, he never follows through. He is transferred out once, but returns because they need him (26). He refuses a medical discharge because it may damage his career (27). Finally, he is officially discharged, but, on the flight to Tokyo, his plane is shot down and Henry is killed (28).
The Henry Blake of the television show is a clumsy, bumbling, often inept commander. He is often portrayed drunk. He always depends on Radar to answer questions, make decisions, give advice and, in general, run the camp. He is out of uniform as much as Hawkeye and Trapper and always wears his fishing cap complete with the flies he ties in his spare time hooked to it. Henry always feels a sense of order and duty from being an Army commander, but he can't seem to bring himself get mad at Hawkeye and Trapper for the stunts they pull. He often apologizes to them for being military. For this, he is constantly on Frank and Margaret's reports as being unfit for command. He is not exactly respected by his men, either. He usually can't get them to quiet down until Radar gets up (29) and he never gets anyone to laugh at his jokes (30). The Henry Blake of the movie is not such a pushover. This is probably because this commander has a second in command to buffer him from the rest of the camp. The movie Henry is never associated with the doctors during their stunts or even aware of them and the doctors of the movie usually manage to keep Henry in the dark as to their pranks.
Henry's girlfriend is Nurse Leslie Scorch who is always hanging her washed laundry on a clothesline in his tent. In many episodes, we see the Japanese doll on his desk, which gets broken in one episode (31). He "avoids church religiously" (32). He "could be on the Olympic snoring team" (33). He is 6 foot 3 (34). He had a butterfly collection though he never caught any (35). He gets paid $813.75 per month (36).
