Major Frank Burns
"If you hadn't been drafted as a doctor, I think you'd have been assigned as a pastry chef." (1)
"If I didn't know better, I'd say the guy was my wife in Army drag." (2)
Major Frank W. (3), Franklin D. (4), or Frank Marion (5) Burns, the second in command for the television shows, but not for the movie, is another Midwesterner from Fort Wayne, Indiana (6). Frank is often called "Ferret Face" which is a name his brother first called him (7). Although he is married, he meets with Margaret on Thursday nights to have "discussions" (8). Frank, along with Margaret, is the villain for the first few episodes but later becomes a much more complex character. Viewers can empathize with him and sometimes even cheer for him when he gets his revenge (9). His intentions are usually good, but rather than do something for the moral reason, Frank does it merely for personal gain. He lives to make money or receive a citation. He isn't really stupid, he just finds the wrong time to state the obvious.
Frank apparently grew up in an abusive home. He says growing up he wasn't allowed to talk or hum at the dinner table. If he did, he was "punched in the throat" (10). He admits that his father beat him as a child and his mother smacked him when he got sick (11). His father took away his Popeye nightlight (12). His parents never got a divorce. He has at least one brother (13). His wife is Louise (14), whom he married because her father was very wealthy (15). He refuses to divorce her for the same reason. They have three (16) daughters, the eldest is probably around 20 years old (17) according to Margaret and the youngest could be a baby (18). He has a nephew that owns a chain of pet mortuaries (19). He had a pet canary as a child that never sang a note (20). Frank's age is unknown, but he has two birthdays during the episodes (21). His phone number might be Klondike5-4433 (22).
Frank flunked out of two medical schools before he finally received his medical degree (23). Apparently, he paid $400 for his medical exam answers (24) and graduated 122nd out of 200 (25). He worked his way through med school selling burial plots (26). Frank's wife is his nurse (27). He has been a practicing surgeon for twelve years (28) and he can't be that bad of surgeon since the 4077th achieves a 96% survival rate while he is there. The other doctors lose some patients as well. He admits that he "wouldn't mind being a doctor if it wasn't for the sick people" (29). Contrary to the above quote stating that Frank was drafted, Frank actually enlisted in the Army ROTC (30) to become an Army doctor though in a later episode he rues not taking ROTC in school (31). He says he joined the army to "clear up his face." (32) He did his basic training at Fort Benning where he trained in a tank for a week (33). After the war, Frank plans to write a book and go into politics (34). His serial number is RA98672412 (35) or RA3683698 (36).
Frank's most important shortcoming is his ultra-patriotism. Frank probably never realizes he is not in America. "They should give this country back to the Indians" (37). Frank sees war as a glamorous thing and, more than anything, wants to be a war hero. He admits, though, that he is too much of a coward to try to accomplish his goal. Two times he gets himself a Purple Heart (38) only to see it passed on to someone more deserving. One time he was captured by the enemy, but they sent him back (39). Except for one episode (40) Frank suffers from extreme paranoia when any Korean is around. He sees himself as a miracle surgeon despite criticism from even Margaret that he is only second rate. The Frank Burns of the movie is not a wimp like the Frank Burns of the television show. The movie Frank is a devoutly religious man who just doesn't want to take part in the activities of the other doctors.
The movie Frank tries to hit back at Trapper and decks Hawkeye instead of yelling foul and pressing charges. One thing the movie Frank and the television Frank have in common is that they look for an enlisted man to chew out when something goes wrong that is beyond their control. The television Frank detests all enlisted men. He would rather not talk directly to his commanders, but instead, use Margaret as his mouthpiece (41). He would like to carry a gun around with him at all times if his roommates would let him. Every time he has a gun, though, it always seems to go off (42). He likes to read the Bible (43). He is always ecstatic when Colonel Potter gives him a job to do and he usually carries it out to excess. He keeps a list of "suspicious activities" in his file (44).
His sense of humor is sarcasm. Frank can't hold beer (45), but he can handle the alcohol from the still as if it was "lemonade" (46). Though Frank doesn't drink anything stronger than a Shirley temple, he is instrumental in establishing the officers' club at the 4077th. He belongs to a country club and has a 30-foot yacht (47). He also has a $35,000 home and 2 cars (48). He keeps a map to money buried in his yard frozen in ground beef and his savings account number is in his appendix bottle (49). In high school, he took acting classes (50), wrote for the school paper (51) and was president of the stamp club (52). He loves to see Hawkeye and either Trapper or BJ at odds with each other. He subscribes to Popular Mechanics, is "cursed with perfection" (53), is a big hypochondriac, and absolutely refuses to give blood (54). He can play "America the Beautiful" on the spoons (55). He has a marble collection sorted by size and color (56). His political affiliation is Republican (57). His religion is Presbyterian (58). All Burns men crack their knuckles (59). His blood type is AB- (60) or B+ (61). He subscribes to National Geographic (62). He was a Boy Scout and a scoutmaster (63). When he is lonely or sad he likes to call his mother. He rode a two-wheeler when he was 13 (64). He always has tapioca pudding on his birthday (65). Once he earned a white bible for organ playing (66).
Trivia: What is the name of Frank's after-shave (67)?
Other comments: I noticed that there are three major characters named Frank. Obviously Frank Burns, but also Benjamin FRANKlin Pierce and Francis Mulcahy (Frank is a very common nickname for someone named Francis). And also BJ since that can stand for anything you want. :-)
