Lieutenant/Captain Father Francis John Patrick Mulcahy
"Father Mulcahy does have a rather unfortunate tendency to forgive people." (1)
"As his commanding officer I have found him to be an outstanding man, an outstanding cleric and an outstanding stand-out." (2)
The chaplain of the outfit is Father Francis John Patrick Mulcahy. This Roman Catholic priest is the only major character played by two different actors, George Morgan in the pilot and William Christopher in the rest. In the movie, the chaplain's nickname is Dago Red because that is what he and Hawkeye were drinking when they got drunk together (3).
It is unknown where the chaplain comes from although it is likely Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (4). Little is known of his family as well. He reminisces his childhood often and talks about his parents, but it is impossible to tell if they are still living. One might assume they have passed away, though, since he does not consider them for the "reunion" party (5). He does have a sister named Kathy (6) or Theresa (7) who is a Benedictine, Maria Angelica (8), at Our Lady of Hermosa (9) in San Diego (10) and plays guard on the church basketball team (11) getting a scholarship to the Holy Name Academy (12). Later, she is coaching at St. Mary's (13) and she plays the Saxophone (14). He also mentions more than one brother (15). He has a cousin Kevin who dropped out of medical school (16). His mother called him Johnny, his sister calls him Francis (17).
Father Mulcahy attended seminary in Philadelphia (18) where he coached boxing at the CYO (19). He also has a Loyola sweat shirt (20) but it is unknown if that was his university. He later became a chaplain in the Army and was at one time stationed on a ship (21). He has been at the 4077th since it was set up (22). He is one of the two members of the M*A*S*H staff to be promoted during the show (23). In the final episode, the chaplain is nearly killed by a bomb and suffers permanent hearing loss from it. His post-war plans are to work with the deaf (24).
Father Mulcahy's only desire is to feel needed. He often does nursing duties to reach his desire. This usually backfires on him as, when he is needed, he is usually overworked. If he is not giving last rites, he is called upon to settle fights and be a peacemaker. But he can become a lion when he is riled. He'll do anything to get people out to his sermons on Sunday.
He is a featherweight boxer (25). His father took him to see his first boxing match when he was twelve years old -- which was 20 years ago (26). He often dreams he is the pope (27). He is shown playing the piano in many episodes (28). He often goes into great irrelevant detail when relating stories of his youth. He always seems to win all the pools and contests (29). He tries to keep morale in the camp by leading them in Bingo (30). Patricia Dugan was the girlfriend of his youth (31).
