Major Charles Emerson Winchester III
"Mere words cannot describe Charles -- Charles has to be experienced." (1)
The last major arrival at the 4077th is Major Charles Emerson Winchester III. Colonel Baldwin, who owed him $627.17 from cribbage debts (2), sent the Major to the 4077th. The major is out for revenge from that day on. Winchester annoys everyone with his pomposity and his attempts to bring an upper class culture to the 4077th. However, as pompous as he is, he always seems to show Hawkeye and BJ the shortcut to the nearest windmill. He always comes up with the solution when there is a mystery at hand. He proclaims himself a voracious reader (3), an accomplished chess player, of championship bridge caliber (4), and usually has a story to top somebody else's.
Charles was born in his Grand mama’s house on Beacon Hill (5) in Boston where five generations of Winchesters have lived (6). His mother was a concert pianist (7) and gave her son a great appreciation for music – especially classical. His whole family has gifted hands (8). He lives at 30 Briarcliff Lane (9), Boston, Massachusetts – or more accurately Wellesley - with his Mother, Father, and sister, Honoria (10).
Charles younger (11) sister, Honoria, is a stutterer (12). She married a farmer once for which she was ostracized (13). It is possible that this is also the wedding that Winchester refers to in his boasting to his swamp mates (14). Then she left the farmer and ran off with a shoe clerk (15). It seems, though, that she was later accepted back into the family. Later she nearly marries an Italian, but the groom's family calls the wedding off (16).
The Major also had a younger brother that passed away young (17). He must have a brother or sister that is already married since he has a nephew, Felix, who gets a discharge from the Army because of fainting spells (18). His "Grandmamma" Winchester possesses the wisdom of the ages and half of Downtown Boston (19). He also has a cousin Alfred (208). His family has a Swedish chambermaid named Christina (20). He has a pet Mastiff, Bruno (21). As for the Major, he is a bachelor with no plans to marry.
Major Winchester put it best: "It was inevitable that I attended the finest institutions . . . (22)." His high school was Choate (23) and his college was Harvard (24). He graduated in 1943 (25) Suma Cum Laude "with one of the highest GPAs ever seen there (26)" lettering in crew and polo (27). On graduation night, he caught pneumonia when swimming the Charles River (28). By age 7, he was already dissecting frogs and putting them back together (29). It is not known how the Major came to be in the Army. He may have been an ROTC officer who was in Tokyo only to demonstrate new medical techniques (30) which makes it sound as if he was not an active soldier at the time. But after upsetting Colonel Baldwin he winds up permanently at the 4077th. It is apparent that this change of duty upset his being considered as chief of thoracic surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital (31). He does, however, end up with the same job at Boston Mercy Hospital when he returns from Korea (32). His serial number is RA864567 (33).
Major Winchester is a Republican who admires General MacArthur (34). He is a hunter (35). He has a collection of cameras (36). He is a music and wine connoisseur (37). He has been exposed to the mumps countless times and never caught it (38). At Christmas time, it is a Winchester tradition to give anonymous gifts to the needy (39). What catches Hawkeye and BJ off guard is that Major Winchester is also a master practical joker. Tom and Jerry makes him laugh (40). He has AB- (41) or B+ (42) blood. He is a Presbyterian (43). He doesn't believe in the supernatural. He uses Ogilvy and Cabot's Hair Sprout (44) but keeps his scotch in the bottle. He has his food sent from home (45). His phone number is Lawrence 8464 (46). With Honoria, he is the 4-time champion of the Beacon Hill Bridge Club (47).
