Captain BJ Hunnicutt
"[BJ's] clean-cut, a family-man, even-temperament -- and in spite of that, I really like the guy." (1)
Trapper John's replacement at the 4077th is Captain BJ Hunnicutt. BJ is different from Trapper in that he prefers to do his own tilting at windmills and refuses to be Hawkeye's Sancho Panza. BJ, unlike Hawkeye, always thinks of family first. When a decision is to be made, BJ always thinks of how the decision will affect a family. He is often considered the ultimate husband or father though he did fall from grace in one episode (2) and almost again in another episode. His biggest disappointment is not being there to see his daughter grow up. BJ is always willing to help someone in need. BJ has a pun or one-liner for every occasion. He has big feet, a cheesy moustache (starting the seventh season) and a "gosh-you're-so-amusing smirk" (3) that adds to his character, yet he is still lovable, compassionate, caring, faithful, and humane. BJ is quiet and shy, but he loves to talk about his family.
The 28 year old (4) surgeon was born and raised in California (5) and currently resides in Mill Valley, California. He has a wife, five foot one inch (6) Peggy Hayden (7) Hunnicutt, usually called Peg, and a daughter, Erin, named after Mike Farrell's daughter. Peg is probably a real estate broker as she takes a test on March 21 (8). Later she takes a job as a Hostess at Papanek’s Coffee Shop (40). BJ often brags or tells stories about Erin. She is born only months before he is drafted and turns two years old during the final episode. In one episode BJ says she is already two (9), but this can only be an oversight. All other references fit together well.
BJ's parents are Bea and Jay Hunnicutt for whom he was named but BJ doesn’t stand for anything; thus BJ is not B. J. He says he has a little sister (10). His father-in-law, Floyd Hayden, is a veterinarian in Quapaw, Oklahoma (11). He has an Aunt Shirley (12) and an Aunt Selma (13). His neighbors are Eddie Hoffman, who is always drunk, and Old Man Wallerstein, who is 83 years old (14). His handyman is a hunk named Carl (15). His baby sitter is Norma Jean (16). His plumber is Elbert Einstein (17). His high school drama teacher was Gerald Rasmussen (18). The best man at his wedding was Leo Bardonero, a chronic practical joker who visits the 4077th in one episode (19). His anniversary is May 23rd.
BJ comes from three generations of doctors and graduated in the top ten every time he graduated (20). He got his degree from Stanford, where he was a member of Tau Phi Epsilon (which blackballed Frank) (21), and did his residency in Sausalito (22). He spent five weeks at Fort Sam Houston and was shipped to Korea (23). He earns $300 a month for his services (24). He is never serious about his plans when he returns home or what he even wants to do first. In Korea, he earns the bronze star, but gives it away to a patient (25). He left without telling Peg the third rung on the ladder was broken (26). His serial number is US39729966 (27).
He has two varsity letters from High School (28); one was for football (29). His hobby is motorcycles (30). His phone number is 555-2657 (31). He is probably Presbyterian (32). His aftershave is Bobaloo #5 (33). The dean of his med school is CR Miller (34). His favorite comedian is WC Fields, his favorite Author is DH Lawrence, and his favorite poet is TS Eliot (35). He sews to keep up his surgical skills (36). He likes steamed clams (37). He also is an avid fisherman (38).
Trivia: What is BJ's dog's name (39)?
