"He brings me one shiny bead and I'll flatter him with a steamroller."
BJ is stuck in the Swamp nursing an ingrown toenail and Winchester comes in and starts playing his music and annoying BJ. Klinger comes in and delivers a package to Winchester. It is more records from home. Klinger also delivers a package containing a record player to Margaret, but her records won't be coming for several weeks. Margaret asks to borrow some of Major Winchester's records, but he refuses. After a session of O. R., BJ returns to the Swamp before Winchester and makes it look as if Winchester had left his record player on all day. The needle has been "ruined". Winchester tries the officers' club, but BJ pays the enlisted to have a party in there. Finally, Winchester asks Margaret to let him borrow her record player, but BJ has warned her that the major was coming. After a disagreement, the two majors figure out what has happened and go to the Swamp to listen to the music. A World War I friend of Colonel Potter's comes in wounded. Hawkeye and BJ find out from some of the patients in post-op that his commands were the reason they were there. Hawkeye tries to tell this to Colonel Potter, but gets chewed out instead. Finally, Colonel Potter goes to the platoon leader to get the real story. Colonel Potter sends a report to have his friend taken off the line.
Trivia: To which composer is Winchester trying to listen?
Facts about Winchesters: "No matter how desperate, a Winchester does not grovel."
A similar episode where Colonel Potter has to betray a friend is "Ping Pong" (S5). Why didn’t Sergeant Zurilli report Colonel Cooke? He says it is because he didn’t think anything would come of it. But that is irrelevant and not an excuse. The Sergeant’s own commanding officer would expect Zurilli to respond to why he didn’t follow his orders and there were casualties. No commanding officer would take lightly to having another officer countermand his orders and get his men killed. Besides, it is questionable whether even a "direct order" from Woody was valid since he was not in the chain of command.
Jamie Farr directs this, his first and only, M*A*S*H episode. John McLiam is a long time actor on both television and the movies. On the big screen he had starring roles in "Cool Hand Luke" and "Rambo, First Blood".
This is an OK episode.
