"You men -- you always worry about little things."
Father Mulcahy comes jogging into camp after visiting the orphans. He is depressed about the living conditions there. When Klinger finds out that Jessop McFarland, a man who missed making the 1952 Olympic team by one tenth of a second, is coming to the 4077th, he starts making bets with the 8063rd on a race. He, with Margaret's help, gets the doctors to invest a week's pay in the bet. Then they find out that the Jessop McFarland that comes is Jessop McFarland Senior, the athlete's father. So they don’t lose their money, the doctors get Father Mulcahy to run in the "interMASH" race against the 8063rd. Father Mulcahy will only run if a roof for the orphanage is the prize. Hawkeye and BJ go with Margaret to talk to the engineers about building the roof and end up betting another week's pay on the chaplain. It turns out that the runner for the 8063rd is Sergeant Earl "Jack Rabbit" LeMasters and he is capable of beating Father Mulcahy by hours. Father Mulcahy, however, "cahootinizes" with Sergeant LeMasters and wins the race. Some soldiers come in wounded and among them is Private Walt Palmer, a stutterer. All of his companions including his C. O., Captain Sweeney, mocks the private and makes him feel stupid. Major Winchester takes the private aside and gives him a book, Moby Dick to read and a little confidence. Unknown to the private, Major Winchester's sister, Honoria, is also a stutterer.
Trivia: What comics did Private Palmer like to read?
Bonus: How long was the race?
When the doctors are drinking at the bar, they are drinking from 80's style aluminum cans with the simple pop-top openings. This is the acting debuts for Mark Anderson, Michael Conn, Ron Kapra and Phillip Brock. William G. Schilling would star as Dr. Samuels on TV's "Head of the Class". Robert Alan Browne appeared as Ralph Statler in the "Psycho" movie sequels.
A forgettable episode.
