"This is so exciting! Many's a time I surprised someone in their tent -- but never a man."
Father Mulcahy is trying to tell Colonel Potter a joke from a new joke book he has when Klinger comes in delivering mail. Colonel Potter notices a letter from Mildred, but it is addressed to Hawkeye so Klinger won’t let the colonel have it. Hawkeye reads the letter which is asking him to throw a surprise mortgage burning party for the colonel. Colonel Potter, however, suspects the letter says that Mildred went and bought a houseboat in Florida. This makes him quite cranky. While Hawkeye, BJ, and Winchester decorate Colonel Potter's tent, Margaret, Klinger and Father Mulcahy try to keep the colonel busy. Margaret goes over the nurses' new duty roster four times (at least). Klinger patches through a fake call to the colonel's wife. Father Mulcahy lets the colonel take his frustrations out on a punching bag. The colonel is cheered up, though, when he sees what the others have done. Meanwhile, a lieutenant who turned down a desk job in Paris to lead his men in combat gets wounded. The sniper is also caught and brought to the 4077th. Hawkeye tells the lieutenant's dedicated Sergeant Lally that the lieutenant may not walk again. The sergeant then tries to kill the sniper but the lieutenant stops him just in time.
Mildred's letter: ...I scrimped and saved and paid off the mortgage on [our] home six months early. I've been setting aside my egg money each month. One day I checked my bank book and lo and behold I had enough to buy the whole henhouse. I am enclosing the mortgage and would like you and anyone who's close to Sherman to give him a surprise mortgage burning party. I'm sorry I can't be there to celebrate with you but tell Sherman that while you're burning the mortgage I'll burn the free calendar the bank sent us.
Trivia: What gift does Hawkeye give the Colonel?
Colonel Potter's says his anniversary is on Groundhog Day. In "Images" (S6) he said it was in April. Jeff East's claim to fame was that he played the teenage Clark Kent in the first Christopher Reeve "Superman" movie.
A forgettable episode.
