"The minute I cut that rope they made me a soldier."
At breakfast everyone is bored. The staff is discussing the many rumors about Ted Williams getting out of the Marines early. Hawkeye and Winchester decide to see if they can start their own rumor. They mention that Marilyn Monroe is going to visit the 4077th as thanks for saving her cousin's life. The next thing they know, General Schwerin is changing his R and R plans and Colonel Potter is hiring a band to play for her. Even the wounded that come in have heard the news. Meanwhile, BJ is planning a fishing trip, but on the way, they rescue a wounded soldier and try to rescue another. The second rescue is aborted when a sniper starts shooting at the helicopter. BJ wants to go down and help the man but the chopper pilot makes him cut the rope. The chopper pilot admires BJ's bravery and puts him in for a commendation. BJ doesn't care about the award. He searches at battalion aid stations and other MASH units to try and find the mystery soldier and never finds him. When it comes time for Marilyn Monroe to come, Hawkeye and Winchester have sent the 4077th a telegram in her name apologizing that she couldn't make it. General Schwerin does, however, present to BJ his award. BJ gives it to Corporal Sonneborn, a patient who was near death, but recovered when he heard Marilyn was coming.
Dear MASH 4077
Unavoidably detained in rushes. Stop. Filming schedule changed. Stop. Am unable to get away. Stop. Feel heartsick. Stop. Please give big wet kiss to doctors who saved my cousin Whitey. Stop.
Kiss, Kiss, Love, Love,
Marilyn.
Trivia: What is the name of the switchboard operator the at Twentieth Century Fox studios?
Harry Truman is still president. Even though President Eisenhower was president for the last six months of the war and there is less than 10 episodes left, they still haven't made him president. When Hawkeye was telling his "greatest thrill" he supposedly got hung up on for saying Ted Williams played left field. But Ted Williams was one of the greatest left fielders of all time. I guess Miss Panama was still upset about the Roxbury goof. But a lot of people screw up directions all the time. Perhaps Mr. Williams walked into the room at the moment she was talking to Hawkeye.
Gerald O'Loughlan was familiar as he had played Lt. Ed Ryker on TV's "The Rookies" a few years earlier. Allen Williams was currently playing Adam Wilson on "Lou Grant". Later he would have a regular role for half a season of "Knots Landing". Michael Bond also had the recurring role of Sam on "Lou Grant". Robert Townsend would act in his own TV show, "The Parent 'Hood" which he also produced. This is Paul Tuerpe's second appearance. He played a medic in "Point of View" (S7). Finally, Natasha Bauman was in this episode and the final episode as well as a couple of "AfterMASH" episodes.
A good episode.
