"The best joke of all was the joke that never came."
BJ nails Hawkeye's boot to the floor. Hawkeye calls this practical joke dumb. He wants more flare, imagination, and style. The top of the salt shaker is loose so Margaret dumps it all over her dinner. The staff call the joke old saying that Trapper, who was the ultimate practical joker, would always come up with new practical jokes. A somewhat frustrated BJ, then, challenges all the staff to a "joke-out." Hawkeye vows he can't be got. The next day, Winchester "kills" a snake in his bed, Colonel Potter has shaving cream in his toothpaste, Margaret has a hole cut in her robe, Father Mulcahy chokes on "tampered" food, and Klinger's file drawer explodes. Meanwhile, Hawkeye is getting more and more paranoid with every joke played on the others. Winchester goes on a doctor exchange with the 8063rd and Hawkeye makes a fool of himself in front of the visiting surgeon. Hawkeye thinks the doctor is part of BJ's practical joke on him. Hawkeye spends the night in the middle of the compound surrounded by barbed wire and armed with a golf club. The next morning Hawkeye finds out that the joke was all on him. He is the only one who really got "got". Hawkeye drops his pants and sings "You're the Tops" for losing the bet.
Trivia: How does Hawkeye get his revenge?
Potterism: "Great Mother Macree!"
There are two big problems with this episode:
1. The writers lost track of the premise of the contest. To ONLY get Hawkeye wasn't part of the deal - “... something on each and every one of you and do it within a 24-hour period.” - so actually BJ lost and HE should have been the one dancing.
2. In the episodes, there is no case where Trapper ever instigated a practical joke. He was always either Hawkeye's sidekick or didn't participate. I suppose that we don't actually know who came up with the ideas for Hawkeye's practical jokes, but when you watch the early seasons, you always assumed it was Hawkeye. Note that the incident where Trapper flies Henry's shorts on a kite is not part of the M*A*S*H episodes. (If you find an exception, please post it here.)
This is Clyde Kusatu's final appearance of four on M*A*S*H. This appearance is the only acting credits for Jin-Taek Yi and Terry Moyer. David Haid also makes his acting debut. He will also be a guest star on "AfterMASH". This episode is one of the season 10 episodes held to season 11 to air.
This episode is as good as it gets for season 11.
