"Someday I'm going to look back at this nightmare and think of it all as just a bad dream."
When Hawkeye has to reopen Corporal Fisher, one of Colonel Potter's patients, the colonel becomes quite moody. Captain Schnelker comes to the 4077th to discuss a new chemical weapon, white phosphorous, being used by the North Koreans and Colonel Potter gets angry. Then, when the colonel learns that Hawkeye signed the release of Corporal Fisher, he blows his fuse. The colonel asks Major Freedman to come to counsel him, but when Sidney arrives, the colonel refuses to talk to him. Meanwhile, Major Winchester "crosses the international enough line" becoming a slob, eating sardines with BJ's pocket knife, and refusing to clean his room or shave. Finally, when the major is out of the Swamp, BJ cleans up the place. Winchester walks in and throws a candy wrapper on the floor. This starts a war between the three of them to see who can make a bigger mess of the Swamp. Colonel Potter looks at what they are doing, but doesn't yell. Then he finally talks to Sidney about blowing his fuse. He feels he is losing his touch as a surgeon.
Trivia: What does Colonel Potter win in the end?
This is the 11th of 12 episodes with Major Freedman. When Hawkeye and BJ became neat is unknown. In "Dear Comrade" (S7) it is those two doctors who are trying to mess up a clean Swamp. The colonel mentions Joe DiMaggio recently retiring. This was on Dec 11, 1951. We learn Sidney is from New York. Colonel Potter says that he is 62 years old, meaning he didn't need to lie about his age to serve in World War I as he mentioned in "Change of Command" (S4). He would have been born in 1889 and roughly 25 years old at the time of that war. Incidentally this is the same age as was General Bartford Hamilton Steele, whom Harry Morgan played 8 years earlier in "The General Flipped at Dawn" (S3).
White phosphorous had been in use since World War I, but not used extensively because the chemical was dangerous to the people building the munitions. In the case of this episode, it is probable that North Korea had just discovered this agent.
An Ok episode.
