BLOOD AND GUTS
Production: 1-G09 (226)
Aired: January 18, 1982 (226)
Writer: Lee H. Grant
Director: Charles S. Dubin
Guest Stars
Brett Cullen - McKegney

Rita Wilson - Nurse Lacey
"You enliven through your teeth."
Clayton Kibbee, a famous war correspondent, comes to the 4077th with six pints of blood, donated by his readers, to do a story on the soldiers that receive them. One soldier, Private Thomas Anthony McKegney of Livingston, Texas, comes in with the motorcycle he has crashed on. One pint of blood is given to him. With Clay's help, BJ fixes up McKegney's motorcycle and McKegney lets BJ keep it. Then Clay causes Lieutenant Lacey to break her date with Hawkeye. Hawkeye tries to break the two up, but it doesn't work. Hawkeye gets more frustrated with Clay when the story relayed over the phone is more fiction than fact. No one wants to listen to Hawkeye when he gripes to them about Clay. Clay gets frustrated when the next patient to get his blood, Private Belson, was injured when he was fishing with grenades. When Clay finds out that there is a lull on, he gets drunk and tries to get BJ to take him up to the front. BJ won’t go so Clay takes BJ's motorcycle and goes alone. When Hawkeye and BJ finally catch up to him, he is along the side of the road, drunk. He has wrecked the motorcycle.
Trivia: The episode shows that McKegney was given one pint of blood, Belson one pint, and Clay was given two. What happened to the other two?
Bonus: Where does BJ get the points for his motorcycle?
Remember that BJ is "Spokes" Honeycutt in "The Yalu Brick Road" (S8). In "The Smell of Music" (S6), Father Mulcahy implies that he has dined with the Pope (al fresco) so he would have known him more than just "by reputation only".
This is the first of two episodes for Rita Wilson. She would have significant roles in the movies "Sleepless in Seattle" (starring her husband, Tom Hanks) and "Runaway Bride" among others. Brett Cullen would be Dan Fixx on the TV Soap "Falcon Crest". He also had many other short-lived TV series and recurring roles on TV. Gene Evans was at the other end of his career. He guest starred in many early TV westerns and had bit parts in many movies. His most famous TV role was as Rob McLaughlin in "My Friend Flicka".
I didn’t like this episode.
