RUMOR AT THE TOP
Production: Z-424 (217)
Aired: November 9, 1981 (217)

Roy Goldman - Roy Goldman
Jeff Maxwell - Igor
Nicholas Pryor - Major Burnham
"Tell me more about Montana, does it have a city?"
A call comes in from General Edwin Torgeson, "Torgy Porgy". He is sending an aide, Nathanial Burnham, to observe the 4077th. Hawkeye realizes that General Torgeson is a "MASH-maker" and suddenly the rumor is that the 4077th will be broken up. Hawkeye and BJ argue about who will be the new chief surgeon, but they are more worried about getting split up. They tell Winchester that Major Burnham is looking for a personal physician for General Torgeson. Winchester kisses up to and annoys the major when he comes. Margaret thinks that they want Colonel Potter, so, while Father Mulcahy is trying to keep the colonel busy painting a picture for the "chaplains' hall of fame" at the Philadelphia Archdiocese, Margaret is making the colonel look bad to Major Burnham. Hawkeye and BJ pretend to eat a dog. They do a mock O. R. where the patient gets lost. Then, as Major Burnham is getting real upset, real wounded come. Klinger pretends to be an Arab prophet. The major finally reveals that they only want to copy the 4077th and not break it up.
Trivia: What is the name of the dog that Hawkeye and BJ pretend to eat?
Bonus: What is Klinger's serial number?
This episode was produced during the 9th season, but held to the 10th season to air. BJ mentions that Hawkeye is chief surgeon because he "got here first". Relative to the doctors that remained, this is true. Colonel Potter likely just didn't give anyone else a chance to be chief surgeon. In the episode "Chief Surgeon, Who?" (S1), where he was made chief surgeon, Hawkeye was probably the doctor with the least seniority.
Hawkeye refers to "The General's Practitioner" (S5) when he says he's had a personal physician job offer before. Truman is mentioned as president. They also remind us of Colonel Blake in this episode. Nicholas Pryor was also seen regularly on TV's "Eight is Enough" as Jeffrey Trout. He would later be Chancellor Arnold on "Beverly Hills 90210".
A forgettable episode.
