"Nothing like doing things the Army way."
Patients come in. Private Markham's heart has stopped and Winchester comes to help BJ revive him. Then a sniper starts firing and BJ and Major Winchester move under a jeep where they revive the man. Then Winchester notices that a bullet had gone through his cap. This causes Winchester to contemplate death. He watches over and annoys Private Markham until BJ finally yells at him. Winchester, then, goes up to the front to the aid station where he meets another dying soldier who seems to satisfy the major. Father Mulcahy is garbage officer, Margaret is morale officer, Winchester is in charge of the motor pool and he makes Rizzo take the jeeps apart. Hawkeye is in charge of the mess hall and there are fifty trays missing. Klinger steals some from the 8063rd and an M. P. comes and takes seventy-five trays back. Hawkeye also tries to teach the cook how to make French toast.
Trivia: What is BJ in charge of?
Alan Alda won his second Directors' Guild award for directing this episode. This is the first credited episode for Val Bisoglio as the cook. He was better known at the time for being Danny Tovo on "Quincy, M.E.". He had also had starring roles in movies like "The Frisco Kid". Jim Boeke had a recurring role on "Coach" as Walter Dybinski. Arthur Taxier starred in the Television Series "Midnight Caller" and also had recurring roles on "Hill Street Blues" and "St. Elsewhere". Mesach Taylor perhaps had the most TV air time of all the guest stars starring as Shel Baylor in "Dave's World", as Anthony Bouvier in "Designing Women" and as Tony in "Buffalo Bill" starring Dabney Coleman.
This episode did have its moments, but the Winchester story was simply a downer.
