"Stupid rules are meant to be broken."
Hawkeye is having problems getting dates with the nurses and he is looking for some new ideas. Then Colin Turnbull, a company clerk for a Canadian MASH unit, comes to visit Klinger. Turnbull loves the food, especially the fruit cocktail and offers to trade a bottle of French wine for a case. When Hawkeye sees Klinger with the wine, he remembers that Klinger owes him five dollars and takes the wine as payment. The doctor advertises a contest with himself and the bottle of wine as the prize. He ends up treating the whole nursing staff. Upon seeing Hawkeye with the wine, Winchester offers Klinger thirty dollars to get another bottle and ends up paying forty. Meanwhile, curare has been declared illegal to use in U. S. MASH units. But, when the medical staff has trouble sedating patients, Colonel Potter decides to use it anyway, and to get it from the Canadian MASH unit. While the colonel goes to trade Colonel LeFleur for curare, Klinger trades Turnbull more fruit cocktail for more wine. On the way back to the 4077th, however, the jeep engine overheats and they have to use the wine as radiator coolant.
Trivia: Who wins Hawkeye's contest?
Hawkeye's contest: "Savor vintage evening with Hawkeye Pierce. Trade your boredom from some Bordeaux, the epitome of the vintner’s art. In 100 words or less tell why you should be in a glass by yourself. Please sign a code name so that your anonymity may be preserved. Decision of the judge will be fine."
Klinger wears a dress again in this episode to go to the front. There is no reason why all five bottles had to be put in the radiator. One would have been enough. 1947 wine that is 4 years old makes the year of this episode 1951. The Second Battalion of Princess Patricia's Light Infantry was stationed in Korea from December 18, 1950 to November 4, 1951, further placing this episode in 1951. Hawkeye's 1947 Desoto was a 1946 Desoto in "The General's Practitioner" (S5).
Charles Hallahan would be Captain Devane on TV's "Hunter". Margie Impert would be Diane Wilson on "Highway to Heaven" and Madeline Jones on "Magnum, P.I."
A decent episode.
