"Well, look at that. A break in the gloom."
On a rainy day Klinger brings in the mail. Hawkeye gets a package full of letters sent from Amy Clark's fourth grade students in a Crabapple Cove grade school. Hawkeye gives everyone several letters to help him answer. Father Mulcahy, in his response, tells of a lush dog, Irving, that he saved by getting it sick of alcohol. Margaret talks in her letter about getting close to a patient that only had a few hours to live. Klinger talks about breeding chinchillas to earn money, but it turns out he has two males. BJ tells in his letter about when they needed a replacement surgeon for Winchester. Captain William Bainbridge turned out to be a lawyer instead of a surgeon so the doctors taught him how to do surgery. Colonel "Hoops" Potter tells about going for a free throw record and having everyone in camp rooting him on. Winchester is taping his letters so that Klinger can type them later. But one letter and a gift from a young lady named Virginia makes him write a response rather than record it. Hawkeye's letter is about a wounded soldier named Keith who was fixed up at a MASH unit, sent back to the front, and then killed. It brings up some feelings in Hawkeye he has never had to deal with before. Hawkeye is discouraged until a man brings in a little girl for an emergency. Later, the camp gets more letters and Colonel Potter breaks the free throw record.
Trivia: What was the gift Winchester received?
Bonus: What is the free throw record?
In "Hawk's Nightmare" (S5), Hawkeye gives a population of Crabapple Cove much larger than the 300 in this episode. Also Father Mulcahy, has indeed saved a life before in "Mulcahy's War" (S5).
Richard Paul had played a mayor in the TV series Carter Country. Later he would play Mayor Booth in TV's "Murder, She Wrote". He also had the recurring role of Mr. Strowbridge in "Full House". Larry Cedar was one of guest stars in the single episode M*A*S*H spinoff, "W*A*L*T*E*R".
The "Hoops" Potter story makes this episode. And I love how they are all "granny-shots".
