"Ah . . . to sleep, perchance to dream."
The staff is taking a break between sessions of O. R. They are all tired so Hawkeye and BJ tell Margaret to get some sleep first. Margaret sleeps and dreams. She is dressed in a bridal gown on a brass bed with her groom. A row of soldiers marches by and her groom falls in line and marches off. When she looks again there are several wounded soldiers on her bed and her gown is stained with blood. Klinger announces that the 8063rd has bugged out. When BJ gets a cramp in his fingers, Hawkeye tells him to get some rest. BJ dreams. He is dancing with Peg through the middle of O. R. where Colonel Potter stops them and gives BJ a scalpel. Two men take Peg away. Colonel Potter has to yell at a lieutenant because he won't send ambulances into a war zone. Frustrated he sleeps. A horse walks into his office and he hops on. He plays polo with a hand grenade in a mine field and the explosion turns into fireworks. Then he sees his childhood. It's Winchester's turn to sleep. He walks into O. R. wearing a tuxedo and starts doing magic tricks. This is followed by tap dancing with sparklers, but the patient in front of him dies anyway. Klinger is trying to warm up frozen blood by putting it inside his coat. The corpsmen are building bunk beds in post-op. A man is confessing to Father Mulcahy, but the chaplain dozes off. There are blossoms on a tree and Mozart's Mass in A minor is playing. Father Mulcahy is carried into the mess tent dressed as the pope to give his sermon. When he opens his Bible, blood drips onto the pages. He turns around and the Christ on the crucifix has turned into a soldier. He turns again and he is in O. R. A general talks to Colonel Potter and asks why some of the patients aren't being shipped out. When the colonel explains his problem with the ambulance dispatcher, the general calls the lieutenant. Klinger is sleeping. He gets off the train in Toledo and walks to Packo's Cafe. When he looks inside he sees Colonel Potter working on a patient. When he gets closer he notices that he is the patient. He thanks Nurse Kelly for waking him up with a big kiss. Finally it is over. They have treated 211 patients in thirty-three hours. Hawkeye is eating in the mess tent and he goes to sleep right there. He is awakened by a professor asking him to explain how to reattach a limb. Hawkeye has to admit he was sleeping and the professor makes Hawkeye take off his arms. His arms are thrown into a lake of arms and Hawkeye is floating in a boat helpless when he sees a hurt Korean child on the bank. He is, next, standing in front of a table with a patient on it, helpless. The sound of choppers wakes him up. At the end, no one wants to go back to sleep.
Trivia: Which of the MASH staff members is in Hawkeye's dream?
There is no laugh track in this episode. The address on the cafe in Klinger's dream (1902 Front Street) is the actual address of the real Tony Packo's Cafe in Toledo.
Gary Burghoff is credited as guest starring though he does not appear. This is the first episode with Catherine Bergstrom as Peg Hunnicutt. Ford Rainey was Jim Elgin on TV's "The Bionic Woman" and, later, Mickey on "The King of Queens". Fred Stuthman had a regular background role on "Lou Grant" as a photo editor.
I thought this was a good (for season 8) episode. It was original as well.
