"Anniversary -- how many h's don't you want?"
It is very cold and the entire camp is in the mess tent to conserve heat. But they are all very bored. When the personnel start asking Hawkeye probing and unusual questions, BJ reveals to him that they are planning his surprise birthday party to perk people up. Hawkeye doesn't like this idea because it isn't his birthday, but BJ refuses to call off the party. Next, Dr. Borelli drives into camp and immediately starts to annoy Hawkeye. His intentions are to demonstrate a new surgical technique, the nerve graft. In Colonel Potter's office they are playing musical chairs when a call comes in from battalion aid saying that a medic has been badly injured and a surgeon is needed. Hawkeye, hoping to get away from everything that is going on, volunteers to go, but Dr. Borelli decides he wants to go, too. The two argue all the way to the aid station. Dr. Borelli dips Hawkeye's cheese into his mustard. The two doctors are still arguing as they start to operate on the injured medic. Corporal Jarvis tries to calm them down but it doesn't work. Then a bomb hits the aid station and both Hawkeye and Dr. Borelli break their arms. Together they prepare the medic for an arterial graft at the 4077th and then resolve their differences. Before Hawkeye and Dr. Borelli leave the 4077th Hawkeye lets everyone know that it is BJ's anniversary. As this celebration is getting underway, a group of freezing soldiers comes into camp to warm up. BJ's anniversary party turns into a birthday party for their sergeant, Sergeant Herbert.
Trivia: What does Hawkeye say is his favorite color?
Dr. Borelli (Robert Alda) first visited the 4077th in "The Consultant" (S3). Robert Alda is, of course, Alan Alda's father and Antony Alda is Alan Alda's brother. You can see Antony Alda as a guard in the movie "National Treasure".
This episode is in a tie for my least favorite episode with "The Consultant".
