In the early eps of Happy days, I've just noticed that Henry Winkler is down the list of the cast even after Anson Williams. Why is this? Starring Ron Howard, Marion Ross, Anson Williams, THEN Henry Winkler.

In the early days Fonzie was an additional person, it started out with Ritchie as the lead, and that carried on and it became an ensemble piece of the family and Fonzie (just my take)

That is basically it Muttley. Originally, Fonzie wasn't a "star" on the show. He was an extra. He didn't even wear his trademark leather jacket (early on, he wore a blue or beige jacket). As his character became more and more popular, he was given a starring role. Then, as the series developed and characters left, Fonzie was the lead star of the show.

In that regards, Fonzie and Happy Days are similar to J.R. Ewing in Dallas, Alex Keaton on Family Ties, and Steve Urkel in Family Matters to name a few. None of these characters were supposed to be a main character (and in the case of Steve Urkel, he was only to appear once or twice) but who became their respective series' main characters.
